HOW TO SURVIVE A ROBOT INVASION
co-created with young people for POLYGLOT THEATRE's 5678 Film Club.
ROLEs: facilitator, animator, editor, sound designer
5678 Film Club was a three-year project that supported young people making the transition between primary and secondary school in Collingwood, Melbourne.
It ran as a weekly after-school film club where Polyglot Theatre and professional filmmakers undertook creative workshops with participants from Grades 5 – 8.
For this project I facilitated weekly workshops with a small group of young people aged 10-14 to create this animated short film. 'How To Survive A Robot Invasion' is a series of video-blogs from different survivors of a Robot Invasion trying to share their stories with anyone else left alive.
The young people came up with the overall world and their own characters, then drew these characters and backgrounds and improvised their dialogue in front of a microphone. I turned the drawings into digital puppets using Character Animator to create the performances based on their dialogue.
I then edited the different stories together into a final animated short film.
Working in this way, the young people were able to fully improvise their performances and whatever they said we turned into an animation, so it was 100% their words and ideas.
It was a really fun project and really happy with how it came out!
